Bhabna at Moscow Festival as ‘Princess Rosy’

The film ‘King in the Land of the Princess’ has been made based on the real-life experience of traditional Bangla jatrapala gradually shifting toward adult-oriented entertainment.

In this film, actress Ashna Habib Bhabna portrays the character “Princess Rosy.”

Directed by Asif Islam, the movie has been selected for the Artcore section of the 48th Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF).

Bhabna described ‘Princess Rosy’ as one of the most challenging roles of her career.

For the character, she had to gain nearly 9 kilograms and also learn the distinctive dance and acting style of jatra performers.

Bhabna said, “While working on this character, I went through both physical and mental transformations. I have fallen in love with the character.”

The film portrays the gradual decline of traditional jatra performances and the shifting preferences of audiences.

It highlights how a dancer known as “Princess” becomes the center of attention on stage and how evolving entertainment tastes influence the art form.

Director Asif Islam mentioned that he has had a deep connection with jatra since childhood, which inspired him to create this film.

The shooting took place in Gobindapur, Faridpur, where a jatra set was constructed, and most of the performers were real jatra artists.

Meanwhile, Bhabna consistently tries to showcase local Bangladeshi fashion on the global stage.

This time was no exception. On Thursday, she walked the red carpet at the Moscow Film Festival, wearing a moss-green gown that drew attention.

She said, “It was an unbelievable experience. I felt proud to represent my country at such an international festival.”

Previously, at the Cannes Film Festival, Bhabna also gained attention by presenting works of local designers and showcasing Bangladesh’s heritage textiles.

It is worth mentioning that Asif Islam’s previous film ‘Nirbaan’ won the Special Jury Award at the 46th Moscow International Film Festival. With this new film, he returns once again to the same international stage.
