Fake DB takes Tk 10 lakh from wife

A fraudster gang has swindled Tk. 10 lakh from a woman in the capital by posing as DB (Detective Branch) police. Later, police arrested the ringleader of the gang, Javed Hossain.

He was arrested on Wednesday night from the Johnson Road area of Old Dhaka. On Thursday, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Media Division NM Nasiruddin disclosed this information in a press release.

Police said the victim woman’s husband, Billal Hossain Molla, was arrested in a case and is currently held at Kashimpur Prison in Gazipur. On the morning of April 5, an unidentified person contacted the driver Rafi’s mobile phone claiming to be DB police.

When the victim woman called back on that number, the fraudsters identified themselves as DB members and told her that her husband was being tortured in remand and that Tk.10 taka would have to be paid for his release. To gain the victim woman’s trust, the fraudsters imitated her husband’s voice and made a tearful phone call. Terrified by this, she quickly collected Tk. 10 lakh from her relatives.

Later, following the fraudsters’ instructions, she went to the front of the CID office at Malibagh intersection and then sent the entire amount via money parcel through SA Paribahan to an address at the Jatrabari branch. After the money was sent, the fraudsters advised her to go to Kashimpur Prison and collect her husband.

However, upon reaching the Uttara area, she found the fraudsters’ phone numbers switched off, at which point she realized she had been deceived, and later filed a written complaint with the detective police.

Police have stated that a regular case has been filed against the arrested person at Paltan Police Station and operations to arrest other members of the gang are ongoing.
