ICT finds evidence against ex-IGP
Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam on Sunday said investigators have found evidence of involvement of former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and several senior officials in the 2013 Shapla Chattar crackdown.
Speaking to reporters at his office, he described the incident as a “heinous massacre” and said a full investigation report is expected within the next 10 to 15 days.
“We cannot disclose names at this stage, but evidence is emerging against multiple officials,” he said, adding that all those found responsible-whether from the police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), army, or civilian administration-will be brought to justice.
The chief prosecutor also noted that Mamun would face prosecution for actions taken during his service, including alleged extrajudicial killings while serving as Rab chief.
He clarified that separate chains of command in different incidents, including the Shapla Chattar operation, allow for distinct legal proceedings, rejecting concerns about double jeopardy.
Earlier, on November 17 last year, Mamun was sentenced to five years in prison by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in a crimes against humanity case, despite turning approver. In the same case, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to death.
Mamun served as deputy inspector general of Dhaka Range between 2013 and 2015.
