Brazil backs Bangladesh’s bid for UNGA presidency

Brazil has expressed support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the presidency of the 81st session (2026-2027) of the United Nations General Assembly.

The assurance came during a courtesy call by Brazilian Ambassador Paulo Fernando Dias Feres on Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday.

He conveyed Brazil’s backing for Bangladesh’s nominee, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman.

Officials said the meeting covered a range of issues of mutual interest, with both sides describing discussions as “productive” and focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Trade and commerce, agriculture, and the poultry sector featured prominently in the talks, alongside broader efforts to deepen existing friendly relations.

In a separate development, Argentina’s Ambassador to Dhaka, Marcelo Carlos Cesar, also paid a courtesy call on Humayun Kabir at the same venue.

During the meeting, the adviser reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to further consolidating ties with Argentina.

Both sides emphasised expanding bilateral trade, enhancing cooperation in agriculture, and increasing engagement in the sports sector.

Kabir also urged Argentina to support Bangladesh’s candidature for the UN General Assembly presidency. Both meetings were held in a “cordial and warm atmosphere”, officials added.
