Dhaka urges IFRC to expand role in Bhasan Char

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called on the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to explore appropriate ways to strengthen its humanitarian engagement in Bhasan Char.

She made the request during a meeting with IFRC Head of Delegation Alberto Bocanegra at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

During the meeting, the State Minister expressed gratitude to the IFRC and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society for their ongoing support in the Rohingya humanitarian response, particularly in healthcare services and access to safe drinking water in Cox’s Bazar.

Bocanegra reaffirmed IFRC’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Bangladesh government to enhance humanitarian efforts. He also showed interest in supporting measures to control the ongoing measles outbreak in the country.

In addition, he highlighted IFRC’s willingness to assist in capacity-building initiatives, improving disaster response systems, and promoting community resilience programs.

The State Minister praised the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the IFRC, noting its contributions since the Bangladesh Liberation War. She also commended the organization’s role in responding to natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as its work in community-based disaster management.

She stressed the importance of engaging youth volunteers in disaster preparedness, especially in early cyclone warning systems and evacuation efforts.

Reiterating her call, Shama Obaed Islam encouraged the IFRC to identify effective ways to expand its humanitarian activities in Bhasan Char to further support displaced communities.
