Weightlifter: Mabia banned

The sample collected from Mabia Akhter before the Islamic Solidarity Games showed the presence of banned ‘diuretics’.

This is basically a type of medicine that removes excess water and salt from the body. Although it helps in rapid weight loss, it is completely banned in sports.

One of the best weightlifters in Bangladesh and a two-time gold medallist at the SA Games, Mabia Akhter, has been banned from all international and domestic competitions for two years after testing positive in a dope test.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has imposed this ban.

Athletes are tested for dope in competitions under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

Mabia’s sample was collected in Dhaka on October 29 before the start of the Islamic Solidarity Games in November last year.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has banned Mabiya for two years after testing positive for doping.

The Bangladesh Olympic Association has officially informed Mabia of the decision. The punishment has been effective from October 29, 2025.

Mabia has announced that she will appeal the ban. She said, “I received a letter from the Bangladesh Olympic Association on Thursday.

It said in the letter I have to appeal within 14 days. I will appeal.”

The sample collected from Mabia before the Islamic Solidarity Games was found to contain the banned ‘Diuretics’.

This is basically a type of medicine that removes excess water and salt from the body. Although it helps in rapid weight loss, it is completely prohibited in sports.

Mabia claims that she did not do anything secretly. She took all the medicines on the advice of a doctor. She also said she has all the prescriptions in this regard.

Mabia, who won gold at the 2016 and 2019 SA Games, is a shining name in Bangladeshi sports.

Although mentally disturbed by the ban, the 26-year-old Mabia has expressed her strong determination to return to the weightlifting stage.
