Climate crisis puts 97pc of households at risk in Koyra

Nearly the entire community in Koyra Upazila of Khulna faces acute vulnerability due to the multidimensional impacts of climate change, with 97 percent of households directly affected by recurring cyclones, storm surges, and rising salinity, according to a recent study.

The findings were revealed in a Community Risk Assessment (CRA) report conducted under the Prostuti Project, jointly implemented by Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS) with funding support from Japan-based Shapla Neer and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The report was presented at a media dialogue held on Wednesday at the CSS Ava Centre in Khulna city. The session focused on disaster risks faced by women and girls in Koyra, highlighting how fragile infrastructure, gender inequality, and economic instability are compounding the crisis.

The study was presented by Prof. Dr. Zakir Hossain and Lecturer Md. Rimu Mia from the Urban and Rural Planning Discipline of Khulna University.

The event, moderated by JJS Planning Coordinator Nazmul Huda, brought together journalists and local stakeholders.

Speakers emphasized the urgent need to improve communication systems, ensure access to healthcare, and promote environmental balance through increased tree plantation.

Participants stressed that without targeted interventions, climate-induced risks in coastal regions like Koyra will continue to deepen, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable communities.
