Over 500 illegal structures evicted from N’ganj highway

More than 500 illegal structures were evicted by conducting drive for three hours long on the Dhaka-Chattogram-Sylhet Highway in the Shimrail Mor area of Siddhirganj in Narayanganj to ensure comfortable traffic movement and easing public suffering. A joint operation led by Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Khandaker Shamit Raja.

The Narayanganj District Administration, Roads and Highways Department, Siddhirganj Police Station, and Highway Police conducted the drive on Sunday.

The district administration urged local residents and all relevant stakeholders to cooperate in order to maintain a easy and safe travel on the highway. However, to occupy the footpaths anger and tension broke out between two local groups.

Law enforcers present rushed to the scene after escalating the tensions between two groups.

They quickly brought the situation under control and allow to resume the eviction drive.

During the visit of the ground, our correspondent said learned that the drive was observed that a group had long occupied government land in the Shimrail area. They setting up various shops and collecting rent from hawkers at fixed rates. They reportedly took advance payments ranging from Tk 50,000 to Tk 100,000, and collected daily rents between Tk 150 and Tk 300.

Traffic movement halted due to the illegal establishments setting up on the Highways. Hundreds of workers commuting to Adamjee EPZ and general passengers frequently due to the severe traffic congestion. Following the eviction, vehicles will now be able to move smoothly along the lane.

After the operation, the administration stated that such eviction drives will continue regularly to keep the roads free from illegal encroachment. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to reoccupy the roads or construct illegal structures.
