DNCC plans designated markets to relocate hawkers

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is preparing to relocate small and mobile traders from footpaths and roads to designated market spaces, aiming to clear public walkways while safeguarding traders’ livelihoods.

DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan said the city corporation will no longer allow businesses on footpaths or roads, but alternative arrangements will be provided for traders to continue their businesses safely. “We are committed to clearing encroachment, but we want traders to maintain their livelihoods through designated spaces,” he said.

The new initiative will include practical relocation solutions, allocation of business tokens to prevent extortion, and dialogue with trader representatives.

A five-member committee has been formed to consult with traders and determine suitable locations and schedules for the move.

“Traders who receive a token should not pay if anyone demands money. Report such incidents immediately-we are on your side,” the administrator added, emphasizing DNCC’s commitment to a corruption-free relocation process.

Traders, many of whom have earned a living on footpaths for years, have expressed cautious optimism. “If the DNCC provides proper spaces and sufficient time, we can continue our business without losing our customers,” said one small trader from Mirpur-10.

Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur Zone, and other local officials attended the session, highlighting the coordinated approach between city administration and law enforcement to ensure smooth implementation.

The DNCC plans to roll out the relocation in phases, prioritizing busy commercial stretches while maintaining public access and safety.
