Adani deal under review for possible revision

The government is reviewing the power purchase agreement signed in 2017 with Adani Group, according to Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood.

He made the statement in a written reply to a question from MP Shahjahan Chowdhury during Thursday’s question-and-answer session of the 13th Parliament, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

The minister said a national committee, formed during the interim government period and led by a retired Supreme Court justice, had examined the agreement. The panel included experts in power and energy, legal affairs, economics, and chartered accountancy.

Following the review, the committee found that the previous Awami League government had signed the deal at a price significantly higher than both domestic and international market rates.

He added that the government is now considering two possible courses of action: seeking resolution through international arbitration or renegotiating the contract directly with Adani Power.
