Hadi murder case: 11th delay in probe report

A court has once again delayed the submission of the supplementary investigation report in the murder case of Inqilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi, marking the 11th such postponement. The next hearing has been scheduled for April 19.

On Thursday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam set the new date after the investigating officer—CID Dhaka Metro (East) Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdur Qadir Bhuiyan—failed to present the report. The update was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Ruknuzzaman from the prosecution.

Previously, on January 6, the Detective Branch (DB) filed a chargesheet against 17 individuals. However, Inqilab Mancha expressed dissatisfaction with the document and requested a reinvestigation.

The matter was first heard on January 12, when the group’s member secretary, Abdullah Al Jaber, asked for two days to examine the chargesheet.

The court granted the request and set January 15 for submission. On that day, Jaber formally objected to the chargesheet, prompting the court to instruct the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a fresh probe.

Hadi, who gained prominence during the July uprising and the movement seeking a ban on the Awami League, had planned to run as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections.

On December 12, he was shot in the head while campaigning in the Bijoynagar area. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgery and later moved to Evercare Hospital in critical condition. Doctors described his situation as extremely grave.

Three days later, on December 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on December 18.

The chargesheet submitted by DB Inspector Foysal Ahmed named 17 accused, including alleged gunman Foysal Karim Masud and his parents, Humayun Kabir and Hashi Begum. So far, 11 suspects have been arrested and are currently in custody.

Six others remain on the run, including Masud, his associate Alamgir Hossain, alleged mastermind and former ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, as well as Filips Scalp, Mukti Akter, and Jesmin Akter.

Among those detained are Masud’s wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, his brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, his alleged partner Maria Akter Lima, and several others: Md Kabir, Nuruzzaman Nomani (also known as Ujjal), Civion Dew, Sanjay Chisim, Aminul Islam Raju, and Abdul Hannan Foysal.

According to the case details, Masud and Alamgir carried out the attack while riding a motorcycle, opening fire on Hadi as he was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw before fleeing the scene.

The case was filed on December 14 at Paltan Model Police Station by Inqilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Zaber. Initially registered as an attempted murder case, it was later upgraded to a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code on December 20, following Hadi’s death.
