Messi leads Argentina in farewell win over Zambia
Lionel Messi captained Argentina to a commanding 5-0 victory over Zambia here at La Bombonera on Tuesday, in what proved to be an emotional farewell on home soil ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 38-year-old forward made his first start of the March international window and is widely expected to have played his final match in front of Argentine fans.
Having featured as a half-time substitute against Mauritania last week, Messi made an immediate impact, setting up Julian Alvarez for the opening goal in just the fourth minute.
Messi then extended Argentina’s lead shortly before the interval, netting his 116th international goal and the 902nd of his remarkable career.
In the second half, the hosts were awarded a penalty, but Messi generously handed the opportunity to veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi, who is set to retire from international football following the World Cup.
Otamendi later expressed pride in his international journey, stating that representing Argentina had been his greatest honour.
“There is no greater satisfaction than wearing the national team jersey. I am very happy to have had this send-off at home,” Otamendi said after the game.
Additional goals came via an own goal from Zambia and a strike by Valentin Barco, sealing a comprehensive win.
Manager Lionel Scaloni praised his side’s response following a below-par display against Mauritania, warning that improvements were essential ahead of naming his final 26-man squad.
Defender Cristian Romero also highlighted the importance of unity, as Argentina now turns its focus to defending its world title.
