NBR mulls raising top tax rate

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering increasing the tax rate for ultra-wealthy individuals from 30 percent to 35 percent, potentially effective from the 2027–28 fiscal year.

“We plan to introduce this after the next fiscal year and will place the proposal before the finance minister,” said NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan at a pre-budget meeting with Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) leaders at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon on Tuesday.

He noted that the higher rate may target a “super-rich” segment, likely those earning above Tk1 crore annually, with the threshold possibly set higher at Tk1.5 crore or even Tk5 crore.

The NBR chief also hinted that the FY2026–27 budget could include measures to raise tobacco prices.
The discussion was attended by ERF President Doulot Akter Mala, General Secretary Abul Kashem, along with NBR officials and senior ERF members.
