BRI launches 2-month training

A workshop titled “Progress and Achievements of BRI” and the inauguration of a two-month modern rice production training for BRI scientists were held on Monday, at the training hall of the headquarters of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRI) in Gazipur, organised by BRI’s Training Division.

The program was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Mobashwer Monem, Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC), who attended as the chief guest. The inauguration ceremony, presided over by BRI Director General Dr. Mohammad Khalekuzzaman, also featured Professor A S M Golam Hafiz, Member of BPSC, as a special guest.

During the event, the keynote paper was presented by Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Director (Research) of BRI, and the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Munnojan Khanam, Director (Administration and General Services).

In his speech, Chief Guest Professor Dr. Mobashwer Monem emphasized that agricultural research institutions, particularly BRI scientists, are working tirelessly to ensure the country’s food security. He noted that the development of improved crop varieties has been key to sustaining the agricultural sector.

However, he stressed that research results must reach the general public for a scientist’s work to be meaningful.

He also highlighted that many talented scientists leave the country due to a lack of adequate opportunities and facilities, and stressed the need to ensure proper support to prevent this loss of talent.
Speaking as a special guest, Professor A S M Golam Hafiz said that the current Prime Minister is deeply committed to the development of the country’s agricultural sector. He pointed out that the immediate waiver of agricultural loans up to BDT 10,000 after assuming office is proof of this commitment.

He added that solving the problems in the country’s agricultural research institutions requires political will and expressed hope that the current government would play an earnest role in addressing them.

In his presidential remarks, BRI Director General Dr. Mohammad Khalekuzzaman thanked all the guests for their presence and expressed hope that the new scientists would gain comprehensive knowledge of modern rice production through this two-month training.
Before the inauguration, BPSC Chairman Professor Dr. Mobashwer Monem and Member Professor A S M Golam Hafiz visited BRI’s C-4 Lab, the Central Laboratory, and the Gene Bank.
