BD’s Independence Day celebrated at UN University
Bangladesh’s 56th Independence Day on Friday, was marked by a special day-long programme at the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo, Japan, where Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus was present.
The celebration featured the singing of the national anthem at UNU, hosted as a dedicated forum honouring Professor Yunus amid Bangladesh’s Independence Day observances.
This event complemented the official embassy program earlier that day, which included flag-hoisting, prayers for martyrs, and a reception with Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kunimitsu Ayano as chief guest. Dr Yunus, former Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, engaged in related activities in Tokyo, including a brief meeting with Japanese leaders and dinner with Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.
UNU in Tokyo, Japan provided a global platform to highlight Bangladesh’s Liberation War legacy and progress, aligning with Yunus’s ongoing international engagements.
The embassy event emphasised economic achievements and bilateral ties with Japan, while the UNU program added an academic and commemorative dimension.
No official reports detail full UNU proceedings, but social media from Yunus’s accounts confirm his attendance and the anthem rendition.
