UN Chief reiterates support, solidarity

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a meeting with the country’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday. During the meeting, the Secretary-General extended his warm congratulations to the newly formed Government of Bangladesh.

He also commended Bangladesh for its continued humanitarian leadership, particularly its generosity in hosting forcibly displaced Rohingya people, reports media.

The two sides discussed a range of pressing global issues, including the ongoing global oil crisis.

The Foreign Minister highlighted the significant challenges faced by developing and vulnerable nations, emphasizing the disproportionate impact of rising energy costs on poorer countries.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, Dr. Rahman conveyed an invitation to the Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. Guterres welcomed the invitation and expressed his appreciation.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.
