Readers’ Voice: UN role under scrutiny again

The United Nations has once again faced criticism over its effectiveness in maintaining global peace and security.

The UN Security Council recently adopted a resolution, tabled by Gulf countries, concerning Iran voting in favour. However, the resolution did not explicitly refer to the roles of the United States and Israel, whose actions are widely viewed as having contributed to the escalation of the current conflict and the broader deterioration of the global situation.

There is a growing perception that the UN is increasingly influenced by more powerful states, including the United States and Israel.

Critics argue that, rather than adopting the current resolution, the Council might have been better served by calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and by addressing the responsibilities of all parties involved.

In this context, some observers believe that Bangladesh could have taken a more balanced position — either by supporting those affected by the conflict or by maintaining neutrality.
