Prof. Mamun appointed 15th UGC Chairman

Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Dhaka University, has assumed office as the 15th Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division issued the appointment order for the position of UGC Chairman, reports media.

Outgoing UGC Chairman Professor Dr. S.M.A. Faiz handed over the responsibilities to the newly appointed chairman. Present at the handover were UGC members Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, Professor Dr. Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Professor Dr. Md. Saidur Rahman, Professor Dr. Mashuma Habib, Professor Dr. Mohammad Ayub Islam, UGC Secretary Dr. Md. Fakhrul Islam, as well as directors, officers, and staff from various UGC divisions.

On March 16, under the University Grants Commission Act, 1973, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed was appointed as the Chairman of the UGC for a term of four years, and a notification was issued.

His appointment took effect from the date he assumed office. According to the terms of the appointment, he will receive salary, allowances, and other benefits as per existing rules.

Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dhaka University, assumed the position of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) on September 12, 2024, and held the role for over one and a half years before joining his current position.
