‘N’ganj Dist Council to become people-friendly insttn’
Newly appointed administrator Professor Mamun Mahmud has pledged to transform the Narayanganj District Council into a more effective and visible institution for the public.
He said that many people still do not clearly understand the role of the District Council, and he wants to bring its services directly to the doorstep of ordinary citizens. According to him, the institution will become a truly people-friendly organization.
He made these remarks on Monday (March 16) while exchanging views with journalists at his office after formally assuming responsibility as the administrator of the Narayanganj District Council.
He was appointed to the position through a notification issued by the Ministry of Local Government on Sunday.
Responding to various questions from journalists after taking charge, Mamun Mahmud said that his main goal is to transform the District Council into a public-oriented institution.
In his view, the council’s activities were not very visible to ordinary people in the past, and he wants to initiate changes from that point.
“I want to turn the District Council into an institution for the people,” he said, adding that the public should be able to directly feel and benefit from its activities.
Mamun Mahmud also stated that development disparities have existed in different areas of Narayanganj for a long time. He believes that during the tenure of the previous government, some areas were deprived of development opportunities.
“Not only Fatullah, there are many other areas in Narayanganj that have suffered from various forms of inequality. We will identify those areas,” he said.
He further mentioned that the District Council will become more active in improving infrastructure, educational institutions, religious establishments, and social welfare activities.
According to him, development work will be undertaken wherever necessary, including schools, colleges, mosques, madrasas, and local infrastructure.
Through these initiatives, he said, efforts will be made to establish balanced development across Narayanganj.
Mamun Mahmud also referred to the recent political context in his remarks. He said that in the past there was a political environment in the country where power often dominated.
“During the rule of the previous fascist government, the policy was essentially ‘might is right.’ That period saw politics of discrimination.
But now we dream of building a discrimination-free Bangladesh,” he said.
He added that the District Council will play a role in achieving that goal and will work to ensure that people in Narayanganj receive the benefits of development equally.
The newly appointed administrator noted that although Narayanganj is an important industrial area, its residents still face various problems.
Waterlogging, weak infrastructure, and shortages in social services are among the issues that require attention. The District Council, he said, will take a more active role in addressing these challenges and easing the suffering of local residents.
He also emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in the council’s activities. Development work will be carried out under the supervision of local people, he added.
“The activities of the District Council will be conducted on the basis of justice and integrity,” Mamun Mahmud said, adding that past irregularities and mismanagement will be addressed while prioritizing public welfare initiatives.
He further noted that many sectors in Narayanganj have not yet received adequate attention, particularly education, religious institutions, and certain aspects of local infrastructure.
He said that efforts will be made to strengthen development initiatives in these neglected sectors through the District Council.
According to him, these initiatives can be implemented through the council’s own funding and various development projects.
