DNCC launches campaign to combat mosquito breeding
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is set to begin a special mosquito control campaign starting on Saturday, as part of efforts to control the spread of dengue ahead of the upcoming rainy season.
The campaign ‘Sanibarer Angikar-Basabari kori porishkar’ (Saturday’s Commitment-Let’s Clean Our Homes) will run every Saturday from 8am to 12pm in 25 high-risk wards, identified as the most vulnerable areas for Aedes mosquito breeding, report media
This initiative is part of DNCC’s larger effort to combat mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue, which spikes during the monsoon.
The campaign will focus on clearing discarded containers and waste, removing mosquito breeding sites, organizing rallies, distributing leaflets, and promoting public awareness.
DNCC’s Health and Waste Management departments will oversee the programme, with participation from entomologists and senior mosquito control officers.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan said the campaign follows the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who instructed the DNCC to carry out special mosquito eradication operations every Saturday.
The objective is to encourage residents to keep their homes and surrounding areas clean, eliminating breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
A survey by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR) and the Health Directorate identified the 25 wards in DNCC as the most high-risk areas for Aedes mosquitoes, which spread dengue fever.
The DNCC will conduct 53 such campaigns between March and May 2026. The initiative is part of an early effort to combat mosquito breeding and control the spread of dengue before the rainy season hits.
The DNCC is urging citizens to clean their homes and surrounding environments, as Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in abandoned containers, trash, and other unused items around homes, workplaces, businesses, and religious institutions.
