Ahmed Azam Khan sworn in as minister
Ahmed Azam Khan, vice chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was sworn in as a minister on Thursday.
Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office at the presidential office.
Ahmed Azam Khan currently serves as a member of parliament representing the Tangail-8 constituency. His induction into the cabinet is expected to be followed by the assignment of a specific portfolio as he begins his duties in the current administration.
Earlier in the day, senior BNP lawmaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected Speaker of parliament, while Kayser Kamal was elected Deputy Speaker.
The newly elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker later took their oaths, administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Before becoming Speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed had been serving as Minister for Liberation War Affairs. He resigned from the post on March 11 prior to assuming the speakership, according to Md Akbar Hossain, assistant private secretary to the minister.
A six-term lawmaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was first elected to parliament in 1986 from Bhola and was re-elected in 1988. He later won the fifth parliamentary election as an independent candidate.
