Sumi’s Open Letter on Women’s Day: ‘Apologising for my mistake, I haven’t given up’

Chirkutt band’s lead vocalist and founding member of the band, Sharmin Sultana Sumi has penned an emotional open letter on the International Women’s Day, detailing her long struggle, achievements and philosophy of life.

In the post on social media, she shared the story of how she rose from a small town to establish herself in the world of music and creativity over more than two decades.

At the beginning of the post, Sumi introduced herself. She wrote that she is a girl from Khalishpur, Khulna – the fourth daughter of the late Maqbul Hossain and Shelly Maqbul of Shailkupa, Jhenaidah.

She also said that she has been involved in band music for about 24 years and has been involved in creative and strategic work for various brands in the advertising industry for about 19 years.

Talking about her journey, Sumi wrote, “Her greatest strength was coming from a small town and working without stopping. She has tried to highlight the story of the dusty soil of this country.

This artiste also believes that she has been able to inspire courage in many people through that journey.

Despite adversity, she has always tried to be there for people with love, laughter, and support.”

At one point in the post, Sumi also openly admitted her mistakes.

In her words, “I apologised when I made a mistake, and was quick to say ‘sorry’ when I hurt someone.

However, despite all this, I never stopped walking with my head held high.”

She mentioned that she gave more importance to working as a human being than a separate identity as a woman.

She also highlighted that she has made a place in the hearts of countless song lovers with her philosophy, words, and tunes.

Sumi also wrote that she never wanted to grow up alone; rather, she believes in moving forward with everyone. She has always tried to walk the path with a smile on people’s faces.

However, she has also faced slander and accusations along the way-yet she has not given up.

In the last part of the post, the artiste shared her perception about life. She said, “Life is very short, and the path of the world is changing rapidly.

So, even in the midst of disappointment, one has to find the means to be good.

Whether it is a concert, a studio, or a script for an advertisement-wherever one is, he wants to create new chapters through work.”
