Seminar on ‘Role of Zakat in Poverty Alleviation’ held

KHULNA: Divisional Commissioner Md. Mokhtar Ahmed attends a divisional seminar titled "Role of Zakat in Poverty Alleviation" held at the Khulna Circuit House on Sunday.

A divisional seminar titled “Role of Zakat in Poverty Alleviation” was held at the conference room of the Khulna Circuit House on Sunday.

Divisional Commissioner Md. Mokhtar Ahmed attended the seminar as the chief guest. The seminar was organized by the Khulna Divisional Office of the Islamic Foundation.

Addressing the function, the Divisional Commissioner said, “Zakat is not an act of charity or fashion; rather it is a compulsory economic obligation intended by Allah for wealthy Muslims.

Zakat should be given solely to please Allah, not for show. Like prayers, paying Zakat is obligatory for every capable Muslim.”

If the Islamic Zakat system is implemented properly and comprehensively across the world, Muslims would be able to regain their lost economic strength and prosperity, he added.

Zakat is not only a means of poverty alleviation but also one of the key instruments to ensure the economic foundation of the Muslim Ummah, the chief guest said.

He also urged the organisers to arrange such awareness workshops on a larger scale from next year by inviting more Zakat donors during the first week of Ramadan.

Islamic Foundation Secretary Sheikh Murshidul Islam and Deputy Director of the Local Government Division of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Md. Ariful Islam attended the seminar as special guests.

Director of Islamic Foundation, Khulna Division Mohammad Mohiuddin Mazumdar presided over the seminar.
