Anger over allocation of widow allowances at Kamalganj
Moulvibazar Correspondent :
Severe frustration and dissatisfaction have arisen among the general public regarding services at the Kamalganj Upazila Social Services Office in Moulvibazar. Many beneficiaries have complained that despite waiting for years, they have received no assistance for widow allowances.
According to local sources, many destitute women in the upazila applied for widow allowances four years ago, but to date, they have not received this government benefit. When the beneficiaries repeatedly contact the social services office, the officials reportedly tell them “no allocation available”, leaving the truly needy excluded from this humanitarian program.
A female beneficiary, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “After my husband passed away, I am struggling to run my household.
I applied for the allowance card four years ago, but each time I go, they say the allocation has not arrived. There is no one to look after people like us.”
Another beneficiary, applying for the elderly allowance, said she submitted her application last year (2025) and has received no update yet.
There are complaints that ordinary people suffer greatly to access various services under the Social Services sector. They are repeatedly turned away under the excuse of allocation shortages.
Concerned citizens have questioned when this stagnation will end and when people will receive the support they are entitled to. Several local residents and members of civil society have urged high-level government officials and relevant authorities to investigate the irregularities and negligence in this sector and take immediate action.
They demand that eligible and truly needy individuals be prioritized and included under the allowance program without further delay. Yusuf Mia, the officer in charge at Kamalganj Social Services, said that allowances cannot be given due to lack of allocation.
However, Kamalganj Upazila Executive Officer Asaduzzaman stated that the complaints will be reviewed carefully and prompt action will be taken.
