Jamaat invites PM to Iftar, Tarique agrees

Staff Reporter :

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday formally invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the party’s Iftar programme scheduled for February 28, in a move seen as symbolically significant amid evolving political dynamics.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Jamaat Secretary General Miah Golam Parwar and Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim met the prime minister at his office at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat around 11am and handed over the invitation letter.

Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said the Jamaat leaders invited the prime minister to attend the party’s iftar event slated for February 28.

In a separate press release, Jamaat said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who is also chairman of the BNP, has agreed to attend the iftar programme with his family.

During the meeting, the prime minister inquired about the health of Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Jamaat and leader of the opposition in parliament, and spoke with him over the phone, the party said.

The Jamaat statement also expressed hope that the government and the opposition would work together in the future for Bangladesh’s development and progress, reflecting what it described as a spirit of political understanding.

The planned iftar, to be held on Saturday, comes at a time when political parties are recalibrating relationships in the wake of recent national developments.

Whether the prime minister’s attendance will signal a broader thaw or remain a ceremonial gesture remains to be seen, but the exchange underscores an ongoing engagement between the government and one of the country’s major Islamist parties.
