At least 20 hurt in MP Hannan’s convoy attack

Staff Reporter :

At least 20 people, including several police personnel, were injured in clashes that erupted after the convoy of Noakhali-6 MP Abdul Hannan Masud came under attack in Hatia on Tuesday.

The incident took place around noon in the Prokolpo Bazar area of Chanandi Union when a group of individuals allegedly targeted the motorcade of the lawmaker during his visit to assess post-poll violence in the upazila.

The situation quickly escalated into a clash as supporters of the MP and the attackers engaged in a pitched battle.

Police said members of the force were caught in the violence while attempting to bring the situation under control. Several vehicles, including more than 10 motorcycles, were reportedly vandalised during the unrest.

Leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) alleged that the attackers were armed with sticks and locally made weapons and accused local Awami League leaders of orchestrating the assault. However, there was no immediate response from the accused individuals.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Abu Tayyab Md Arif Hossain said multiple police teams were deployed to the scene. “We are collecting details about the incident. Further action will be taken based on findings,” he said.

Meanwhile, MP Hannan Masud said he would remain in the area until those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.

Tension remained high in the area following the clash, with law enforcement maintaining a strong presence to prevent further violence.
