BCB to launch BPL for women in April
Sports Reporter :
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the launch of the first-ever Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) in a press release on Wednesday. They will organize the tournament with three teams, and it will be held at Home of Cricket Mirpur’s on April 3 to15.
This tournament will be the first franchise-based T20 tournament for women in Bangladesh’s history, which is one of the steps towards the professionalisation of women’s cricket in the country.
I’m looking forward to the tournament, believing it will also help the team prepare for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in England in June 2025, Bangladesh women’s team Captain Nigar Sultana said.
“If you want to compete in world cricket in the T20 format, you have to look at how other countries are progressing through franchise cricket. Most players take part in franchise leagues in different places, and that is how their skill levels develop in various ways. So for us, this would be a very good opportunity,” Nigar added.
Three franchise teams will participate in the inaugural edition, where top national cricketers as well as emerging talents will get a chance to play. Local players will be selected through a ‘player draft’ process. BCB Director and Chairperson of the BCB Women’s Wing Rubaba Daula, has been appointed Chairperson of the
WBPL Governing Council.
