Zubaida Rahman pledges free edu for girls
Staff Reporter:
Stating that Bangladesh’s development remains incomplete without women’s empowerment, Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, on Sunday promised to extend free education for girls up to the honours level if the party is voted to power.
She made the remarks while speaking at a meeting with women representatives from the Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas, held at Gulshan Lake Park. Emphasising women’s central role in national progress, Dr Zubaida said women constitute 51 percent of the country’s population and their full participation is essential for effective nation-building.
“At this critical juncture, everyone must contribute from their respective positions to ensure education, healthcare and employment opportunities for the women of Bangladesh,” she said, reiterating that development cannot be achieved without empowering women. A noted cardiologist, Dr Zubaida highlighted persistent gaps in maternal healthcare, pointing to the deaths of mothers during childbirth due to inadequate medical facilities. She said a BNP government would ensure that every upazila health complex is equipped with safe childbirth facilities and comprehensive maternal and child healthcare services.
Addressing the issue of child marriage, she said extending free education for girls up to the honours level would help ensure that no girl’s aspirations are cut short. “We will promote and protect girls’ education across the country so that no one has to worry about their dreams being shattered,” she said.
Dr Zubaida also pledged that if the BNP comes to power, a dedicated women’s support cell would be established to provide financial and other forms of assistance. She further promised six months of maternity leave with full pay for working women, along with the proper implementation of parental support laws to ensure the care of elderly parents.
Encouraging residents of Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara to work collectively to address local issues, she said the BNP would ensure inclusive development in the area.
Arafat Rahman Koko’s wife, Syeda Shameela Rahman, and Tarique Rahman’s daughter, Zaima Rahman, were also present at the meeting.
