Historical drama ‘Karbala’ staged

Entertainment Desk :

The Islamic mythological and traditional story of ‘Karbala’ has recently been staged
at the Dr Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Mohila Samity, produced by Pragoti Natyam.

The play was written and directed by Dr Zaharaby Ripon, said a press release.

Based on ancient Islamic mythology and tradition, the play presents on stage
the backdrop of the unequal battle between Hazrat Imam Hussain and the forces of Yazid on the plains of Karbala.

While the storyline follows historical events, a touch of imagination has been incorporated.

Therefore, the play is not an exact depiction of Islamic mythology and history; rather, it blends history with creative interpretation to construct a dramatic narrative.

The production highlights the final phase of Hazrat Ali’s (RA) rule and, through
subsequent events and the death of Hazrat Hasan, indicates the rise of Hazrat Muawiya as ruler.

The cast of play ‘Karbala’ includes Hasan Shahriar Rahman, Bhaskar Roy, Jabed Hamin, Sharmin Sultana Moni, Sanzida Akter, Dina Akter, Abdur Rahman Rakib, Tofayel Ahmed Priyad, Sohana Islam, Rajib Jisan, and Yarin Taslim Yashfa, among others.

The costume design was done by Enamtara Saki, while stage design and lighting were managed by Hendry Palash.

The dance and choreography were arranged by Md Roman Islam, along with the contributions of many others behind the scenes.

Prior to staging of the play, a seminar titled ‘From Islamic Caliphate to Monarchy: The Context of the Karbala Incident’ was held.

The keynote paper was presented by poet Moniruzzaman Badal, and poet and journalist Imran Mahfuz took part in discussion. The seminar was presided over by novelist Raihan Siddique.

The speakers presented relevant interpretations of contemporary global politics and social systems in the context of the Karbala incident.
