Election-linked violence raises concerns, railways put on high alert

Staff Reporter :

With the general election and referendum approaching, the government has intensified security measures to maintain a peaceful electoral environment.

Despite these efforts, incidents of election-related violence have been reported in different parts of the country, prompting heightened vigilance over public transport, particularly the railway network.

Amid concerns that vested groups may attempt to destabilise public life through acts of sabotage, the Ministry of Railways has warned of possible threats targeting trains and railway infrastructure.

In response, the ministry has instructed all concerned authorities to take the highest level of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of passengers, trains, and rail assets.

The directives were issued through an official order signed on Saturday, by Fatema Tuz Johora, Senior Assistant Secretary (Additional Charge) of the Ministry of Railways, according to a ministry press release.

The order noted that the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum could be used as a pretext by certain groups to carry out disruptive activities, with railways remaining a potential target due to their role as a key mode of mass transportation.

Under the instructions, relevant agencies have been asked to identify necessary security steps, implement them without delay, and submit progress reports to the Ministry of Railways.

Coordination with local administration, railway police, and other law enforcement agencies has also been emphasised to strengthen surveillance across stations, trains, and rail tracks.

At the same time, the government has increased monitoring of overall vehicular movement, including trains, following recent incidents of election-related violence. Patrols and security checks have been reinforced to deter any attempt to create unrest during the election period.

The ministry has also called on the public to remain alert. Anyone noticing suspicious activities, acts of sabotage, or attempts to damage railway property has been urged to immediately inform nearby railway staff, gatekeepers, or the Railway Police.

Complaints can also be lodged through Bangladesh Railway’s hotline number 131.
Officials say these measures are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted train services and safeguarding public safety as the country heads into a crucial electoral phase.
