Moulvibazar records country’s lowest temperature

Moulvibazar has been gripped by cold for the past few days. A mild cold wind is sweeping across the district. The bone-chilling cold and frosty air have disrupted daily life in Moulvibazar. On Monday, January 26, at 9:00 a.m., the country’s lowest temperature was recorded at 10°0C.

During mornings and nights, the surroundings are covered in a blanket of fog, making the cold more intense. Due to the dense fog, vehicles on the roads have to use their headlights while moving. The prolonged bone-chilling cold and frosty winds have brought normal daily activities to a standstill.

People leaving their homes are seen wearing warm clothing. The harsh weather has caused extreme hardship for lower-income laborers. However, the presence of sunlight after 10:00 a.m. provides some relief from the cold. The suffering is especially severe in the haor (wetland) and tea garden areas. Children and elderly people in these areas are facing various cold-related health problems. Over the past few days, the frosty winds and dense fog have made daily life extremely difficult.

Due to the lack of necessary warm clothing, the poor spend their nights sleepless trying to cope with the intense cold. Burning wood and straw remains their only source of warmth.

While in previous year’s charitable individuals and organizations distributed blankets and warm clothes at the beginning of the winter, this year no such initiatives have been observed so far. Domestic animals have also been affected by the extreme cold.

Farmers fear that the dense fog may damage the boro paddy seedbeds. The Srimangal Meteorological Office reported that on Monday, Srimangal recorded the country’s lowest temperature at 10.0°C. On Sunday, the minimum temperature was 10.2°C. On January 25, the minimum temperature in Srimangal at 6:00 a.m.

was 10.0°C; on January 24 it was 12°C, January 23 it was 11.4°C, January 22 it was 11.7°C, January 21 it was 11.7°C, and January 20 it was 12.0°C. Anisur Rahman, senior observer at the Srimangal Meteorological Office, stated that on Monday, January 26, at 9:00 a.m., the minimum temperature was recorded at 10.0°C. On Monday, January 25, at 6:00 a.m., the minimum temperature was 10.2°C. He added that the temperature may drop further once the dense fog clears.

Hospitals across Moulvibazar district continue to see regular admissions of children and elderly patients due to cold-related illnesses. Meanwhile, shops selling warm clothing are witnessing a daily rush of lower- and middle-income residents.
