Govt working tirelessly to restore democracy
Staff Correspondent:
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nasimul Ghani, said the current government is running the country under a war like situation and is working relentlessly to bring Bangladesh back onto the path of democracy following a revolution. Despite the challenges, efforts to introduce necessary structural reforms are continuing, he said.
He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists after inaugurating the Modern Fire Service and Civil Defence Station at Shibu Market area in Fatullah, Narayanganj, as the chief guest.
Responding to a question on whether recent incidents of killings would affect the upcoming election, the senior secretary said it is difficult to say at this stage whether there will be any impact. He noted that it depends on the nature of each incident and the context in which it occurred. He added that murder rates in the country have declined significantly compared to the past.
“Citizens are as safe now as they were before, and overall law and order remains under control. Our statistics show that the number of murders in Bangladesh has decreased considerably compared to previous periods,” he said.
Highlighting the role of the Fire Service, Nasimul Ghani said that in times of crisis, even when people fail to receive responses from other quarters, they often get immediate help from the Fire Service. Beyond firefighting, the Fire Service provides a wide range of services, including rescuing people and animals during disasters. In many cases, its members sacrifice their own lives to save others.
Praising the force, he said the Fire Service is working to achieve 100 percent success in serving the public, responding swiftly to emergencies with just a single phone call. “If we fail to further strengthen this force, it will be a failure for all of us. However, the government has the goodwill, and efforts will continue until the very end,” he added.
The event was also attended by Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal as a special guest.
