Khulna Correspondent :

The biting cold has been taking a toll on children across Khulna and neighboring districts, leading to a surge in winter-related and waterborne illnesses. In the past three days, 195 children have been admitted to Khulna Divisional Children’s Hospital, while around 1,400 received outpatient care.

Hospital sources reported that children from 10 districts in the region are falling ill with fever, cold, cough, cold diarrhea, stomach pain, and pneumonia due to the harsh winter. Many parents are bringing their children to Khulna for specialized treatment.

Speaking to The New Nation , Lucky Mousumy from Daibaggohati, Morolganj in Bagerhat, said he admitted his three-year-old son, Haidar, to the hospital after he developed pneumonia. “The cold hit us hard over the past three days. My child was running around the house barefoot, refusing blankets at night.

He suddenly developed a fever and cough on Sunday. Local treatment didn’t help, so we came to Khulna. The doctors confirmed it was pneumonia, and we admitted him here. Thankfully, his condition is now improving,” he said.

At the outpatient department, more than 50 children were waiting with their mothers, seeking treatment for cold-related illnesses.

Dalia Begum, acting administrative officer of the hospital, said, “Khulna has experienced a severe cold spell over the past three days. During this period, 1,400 children received outpatient care, and 195 were admitted for treatment of cold and other illnesses.”

Dr. Md. Majharul Islam, resident medical officer, added that the hospital has 36 cabin beds and 270 general beds, which are now almost full. “Children from districts including Jashore, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Narail, Pirojpur, and Gopalganj are seeking treatment here. If beds are available, we admit children; otherwise, we guide parents to government hospitals or clinics,” he said.
