Bolster Presence in BD: BYD overtakes Tesla globally

Staff Reporter :

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has overtaken Tesla in global electric vehicle (EV) sales, a development that is also being reflected in Bangladesh’s emerging EV market.

Industry data from 2025 shows BYD selling more fully electric vehicles worldwide than Tesla, ending the US automaker’s long-standing dominance.

Analysts say the shift highlights the growing influence of Chinese EV manufacturers, particularly in developing markets such as Bangladesh, where affordability and availability play a decisive role.

In Bangladesh, BYD has established a visible presence, with several models already running on the country’s roads, especially in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Vehicles such as the BYD Atto 3 have gained popularity among urban buyers due to comparatively lower prices, fuel savings, and rising awareness of environmentally friendly transport.

By contrast, Tesla vehicles remain rare in Bangladesh, largely due to high import duties, lack of official dealerships, and limited charging infrastructure.

Most Teslas seen locally are privately imported, making them significantly more expensive and less accessible to the average consumer.

Automobile market observers say BYD’s global success is likely to further strengthen its position in Bangladesh, as interest in electric vehicles continues to grow amid rising fuel costs and concerns over air pollution.

“Bangladesh’s EV market is price-sensitive,” said an industry analyst. “Brands like BYD, which offer relatively affordable electric options, are better positioned to expand here than premium manufacturers.”

Government officials have previously indicated support for electric mobility as part of Bangladesh’s long-term environmental and energy goals.

As charging infrastructure slowly expands and policy support improves, experts believe Chinese EV brands will play a leading role in shaping the country’s electric transport future.

The global shift from Tesla to BYD thus signals not just a change in international rankings, but also a broader realignment of the EV market—one that is increasingly visible on Bangladesh’s roads.
