Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, who is currently serving as an additional attorney general, has been assigned the additional responsibilities of the Attorney General of Bangladesh. The Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry made the announcement on Thursday.
According to the ministry, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has approved the appointment of Mohammad Arshadur Rouf to hold the additional charge of attorney general with immediate effect. The decision follows the resignation of the incumbent Attorney General, Mohammad Asaduzzaman.
Rouf assumed the additional role after Asaduzzaman stepped down from the country’s top legal position. The ministry stated that the appointment was made to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the Attorney General’s Office and the continuation of legal proceedings on behalf of the state.
Mohammad Asaduzzaman had earlier submitted a leave letter to the Attorney General’s Office on December 27, as he decided to contest the upcoming parliamentary election from the Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency as a candidate of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He has already collected his nomination papers from Shailkupa in preparation for the election.
Asaduzzaman, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court and former BNP human rights secretary, was appointed Attorney General on August 8, shortly after the Awami League-led government was ousted following the July Uprising. His tenure, though brief, marked a significant transition period in the country’s political and legal landscape.
Officials said the assignment of additional charge to Arshadur Rouf reflects the government’s intention to maintain stability and continuity in the state’s legal representation during the ongoing political developments.
