Khaleda’s janaza today

Staff Reporter :

The Namaz-e-Janaza of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will be held at 2:00pm today at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad complex on Manik Mia Avenue, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting of the party’s standing committee, Fakhrul said she will be laid to rest beside the grave of her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, following the Janaza.

He said Khaleda Zia passed away at a critical moment, when the nation is moving toward an election for democratic transition. “At a time when the entire nation is preparing to establish democracy through an election, she left us,” he said.

Fakhrul said the BNP would continue to follow the path shown by its leader to institutionalise democracy through free and fair elections.

He added that the Janaza will be led by the khatib of the national mosque, Baitul Mukarram, while BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan will oversee the proceedings.

Recalling her political life, Fakhrul said Khaleda Zia devoted herself to the struggle for democracy, working to institutionalise democratic values both in government and in opposition.

He described her death as an irreparable loss to Bangladesh’s political history that cannot easily be filled.
