Assault on Osman Hadi: He will be taken to Singapore today

Staff Reporter :

Sharif Osman bin Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a prospective independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, will be flown to Singapore on Monday afternoon for advanced medical treatment, the Chief Adviser’s press wing said on Sunday.

According to the press wing, the decision was taken following consultations with specialist doctors and Hadi’s family, on the instructions of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

An air ambulance has been arranged, along with a medical team, and all travel-related preparations have been completed.

The press wing said Hadi’s condition is currently stable but unchanged. He will be admitted to the accident and emergency department of Singapore General Hospital upon arrival, where all necessary arrangements for his treatment have been made.

The government will bear all expenses related to his treatment abroad, the statement added.

The Chief Adviser has also directed the relevant authorities to closely monitor Hadi’s medical care.

The Chief Adviser has sought prayers from the country’s people for Hadi’s speedy recovery, the press wing said.

Earlier physicians said, Sharif Osman bin Hadi remains in a critical condition with no clinical improvement.

Members of the multidisciplinary medical board treating Hadi at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka confirmed that his condition has remained unchanged since Friday, when he was critically injured in a gun attack in the capital’s Old Paltan area.

Dr Abdul Ahad, neurosurgeon at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and member secretary of the National Health Alliance, briefed journalists outside Evercare Hospital, saying repeat CT scans conducted on Sunday showed no positive progress.

According to him, cerebral swelling has increased, indicating a highly concerning situation.

“The injury to the brain stem is extremely severe. There is significant brain swelling and oxygen deficiency, and scattered clots have been detected in different areas of the brain,” Dr Ahad said.

He added that Hadi’s Glasgow Coma Scale score remains at 3, the same level recorded earlier.

Doctors said Hadi’s lungs are being supported by mechanical ventilation, while kidney function has improved and is currently normal.

His pulse and blood pressure are stable, although fluctuations are being monitored closely due to the brain stem injury. Other organs are functioning with medical support.

The medical board also noted that blood clotting and bleeding parameters are largely under control, though disseminated intravascular coagulation remains unchanged. No new complications have developed so far.

A detailed medical case summary has been sent to several hospitals in Singapore and Thailand as the family explores the possibility of advanced treatment abroad.

However, doctors stressed that any decision to transfer Hadi overseas will depend on both his physical stability and acceptance by a foreign hospital.

“Nothing has been confirmed yet. It depends entirely on whether a hospital abroad agrees to take the case and whether the patient is stable enough to be moved,” Dr Ahad said, adding that the final decision rests with Hadi’s family.

The medical board has advised 72 hours of close observation, which is due to conclude on Monday night.

Inqilab Mancha representatives said Hadi remains in a deep coma and is still not out of danger, though doctors have observed some internal physiological responses.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have intensified their investigation into the attack.

Police and the Rapid Action Battalion have identified the motorcycle used in the shooting and detained its registered owner for questioning.

Authorities have also released the photograph of a suspect and appealed to the public for information.

The shooting took place at around 2:24pm on Friday while Hadi was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where emergency surgery was performed, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that evening for advanced care.

Doctors continue to describe his condition as extremely critical, saying he has not yet been declared out of danger.
