Tobacco Factory in N’ganj Fined Tk 200,000

A mobile court in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj area sentenced the owner of Royal Tobacco Company to one month’s imprisonment and fined him Tk 200,000 for selling cigarettes while evading government tax. The joint operation was conducted by RAB-11, the Narayanganj District Administration, and the Customs, Excise & VAT Department,
Narsingdi. The matter was confirmed by RAB-11 Company Commander ASP Md. Al Masud Khan late Monday night (October 27).
He stated that Royal Tobacco Company had been selling cigarettes Millegally by reusing old tax labels. Used labels were being peeled off from old cigarette packets and reapplied to new ones before marketing them, causing the government to lose significant revenue.
Based on intelligence, RAB-11 monitored the factory for several days and confirmed that it was regularly using old tax stamps to evade VAT. Following discussions with the district administration and VAT officials, a joint mobile court operation was carried out.
During the operation, Executive Magistrate Khandaker Sumit Raja fined factory owner Md. Maharaj Hossain (52), son of the late Mokbul Ali Hawlader of Godnail, Siddhirganj, Tk 200,000 and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment without labor. The magistrate further stated that surveillance has been intensified against other institutions involved in
similar irregularities.
