3 confess JnU student Jobayed killing
Staff Reporter :
Three accused — Jagannath University (JnU) student Barjis Shabnam Barsha, her boyfriend Mahir Rahman, and his friend Fardin Ahmed Aylan — have confessed before a Dhaka court to murdering fellow JnU student Jobayed Hossain.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk confirmed that the three gave separate confessional statements before Metropolitan Magistrates Mehedi Hasan, Masum Mia, and Jewel Rana, after being produced by case investigation officer Md Ashraf Hossain of Bangshal Police Station on Thursday. They were later sent to jail.
Police said Barsha and Mahir, who had been in a relationship for about a year and a half, planned the murder after Mahir learned that Barsha had developed another relationship with Jobayed, who tutored her in science subjects.
According to DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Mohammad Nazrul Islam, the couple
planned the killing on 26 September, and executed it on 19 October, when Jobayed went to tutor Barsha at a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area. Mahir and Fardin allegedly confronted him there, and during a heated altercation, Mahir stabbed Jobayed in the neck.
Seriously injured, Jobayed ran upstairs seeking help but collapsed on a staircase, where Barsha reportedly refused to assist him. His blood-stained body was later recovered from the scene.
DMP officials said Mahir’s mother did not voluntarily surrender her son; police had applied “tactical pressure” on the family to ensure his arrest.
Two days after the murder, Jobayed’s brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed a case against the trio. CCTV footage from the area showed two suspects fleeing the scene around the time of the attack.
Jobayed, a statistics department student (session 2019–20) at JnU, was buried in his home village in Cumilla on 20 October.
JnU students have since staged demonstrations demanding justice and exemplary punishment, while the university has declared two days of mourning in his memory.
