Fakhrul meets Sylhet div nomination aspirants
Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a meeting with nomination aspirants from constituencies in the Sylhet division ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election.
The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., attended by around 80 nomination seekers from the 19 constituencies across Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj districts.
According to several nomination aspirants who attended the meeting and later spoke to journalists, the Secretary General first met with aspirants from Sunamganj, followed by Sylhet, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj, holding separate discussions with each district group.
He gave several instructions to all participants, emphasizing that everyone must work to ensure the victory of whoever is nominated by the party.
Many nomination seekers also presented their political activities to the Secretary General, who listened attentively to all their statements.
However, two aspirants – Khandaker Abdul Muktadir (for Sylhet-1: City and Sadar) and Nasir Uddin Chowdhury (for Sunamganj-2: Dirai and Shalla) – were unable to attend despite being invited, as they are currently abroad.
Sources said that former Sylhet City Mayor and BNP Chairperson’s adviser Ariful Haque Chowdhury was invited to the meeting as a potential candidate for Sylhet-4 (Gowainghat, Companiganj, and Jaintapur).
However, during the meeting, he informed the Secretary General that he was seeking nomination for Sylhet-1, not Sylhet-4.
Meeting sources added that Mirza Fakhrul also conveyed messages from BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the aspirants.
He said the party would select candidates based on multiple surveys, ensuring that the most popular and widely accepted leader would receive the nomination.
He further warned that anyone who attempts to cause chaos or harm the party would face strict organizational action.
The key message was clear: everyone must remain united in support of the “sheaf of paddy.”
After the meeting, Sylhet district BNP President Abdul Qayum Chowdhury, who attended as an aspirant for Sylhet-3 (South Surma, Fenchuganj, and Balaganj), told Journalists that the Secretary General had instructed all aspirants to campaign in favor of the party symbol.
He also conveyed that the party would nominate the most qualified candidate at the appropriate time.
For the past few months, multiple BNP leaders across all 19 Sylhet constituencies have been vying for nomination, organizing various programs at the grassroots level to demonstrate their strength.
This has at times sparked both open and hidden rivalries within local party circles.
A BNP source said that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been entrusted with overseeing the selection and evaluation of candidates in the Sylhet division. The purpose of the meeting was to consult with all nomination seekers.
The key message delivered was that, once the party announces a single candidate for each seat, all differences must be set aside and everyone must work collectively to ensure the candidate’s victory.
