24 Arrested with Drugs and Weapons in Nganj, 5 Sentenced
Staff Correspondent :
In a late-night operation at Narayanganj’s Gymkhana area, a joint force
arrested 24 individuals with various drugs, drug-use equipment, and
locally made weapons. Among them, five were sentenced on the spot to
different jail terms by a mobile court, while the remaining 19 were
handed over to the local police.
The convicts include Faisal (21) from Gymkhana Railway Colony and
Rifat (20) from Jallarpar, both sentenced to 12 days in jail; Jubair
Bhuiyan Rana (36) from Deovogh Pacca Road, sentenced to 20 days;
Mostafa Hossain (26) from Jallarpar, sentenced to 14 days; and
Avinondi (30) from Dailpotti, sentenced to seven days. The sentences
were delivered by Executive Magistrate T M Rahsin Kabir, who led the
raid.
The operation was carried out with support from additional police
superintendent Tarek Al Mehdi, district police, DB police, and army
personnel.
During the raid, police seized about 1.5 kilograms of marijuana, 250ml
of foreign liquor, three large knives, a steel machete, a spear, and two
iron pipes from the residence of listed drug dealer Alam Chan, who
already faces 10 prior drug cases. Separate cases under the Arms Act
and Narcotics Control Act are being filed against him.
Two female drug dealers were also arrested: Parveen Akhter (35) with
24 yaba pills, and Afrina Hasi (50) with 36 yaba tablets. Cases under the
Narcotics Control Act are being lodged against them as well.
Magistrate Kabir stated that the operation was conducted based on
reports of rampant drug sales and abuse around Gymkhana Lake. He
added that 19 detainees were handed over to police, while 5 received
instant jail sentences. Among the convicts, three were fugitives wanted
in multiple drug cases.
Additional Police Superintendent (Crime & Operations) Tarek Al Mehdi
said that rising drug addiction among young people has fueled teenage
gangs, theft, robbery, mugging, and even killings in the district. He
emphasized that anti-narcotics drives will continue as part of the police’s
“zero tolerance” policy.
