Women and children hospital for underprivileged in Ashulia
City Desk :
Ashulia Women and Children Hospital is working to avoid unnecessary caesarean sections in childbirth. The hospital maintains a Cesarean (C-section) rate of 35-40 percent, while in Bangladesh’s private hospitals, the rate is 70-75 percent, and in corporate hospitals, it is 90-95 percent.
Located in Savar Upazila just outside Dhaka city, the hospital started its journey in 2004, according to a media statement from the hospital.
Over the last 20 years, 23,351 women have given birth here. Examining the patient registration over the last three years (2022-2024) reveals that out of 5,654 deliveries, 2,210 were via C-section and 3,444 were normal deliveries. That is, 39 percent of babies were born via surgery — almost half the rate seen in private hospitals, reports bdnews24.com.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dabir Uddin Ahmed was quoted as saying, “Specialist doctors are available here 24/7, encouraging expectant mothers, giving them courage, and making every effort for normal delivery.”
To facilitate easier normal deliveries, the hospital arranges team-based physiotherapy or group exercise sessions. In 2024, 20 such sessions were held with 147 pregnant women participating. Of these, 113 have given birth so far, with 79 percent normal deliveries and only 21 percent needing surgery. These sessions are ongoing.
Dabir also said that women who had previously delivered via C-section once or twice elsewhere have successfully had normal births (VBAC) here.
