Unity vital to prevent return of fascism

Staff Reporter :

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has emphasised the need for unity among pro-democracy political parties, calling it essential for national progress and the preservation of democratic values.

Speaking virtually ahead of the BNP’s “Victory Rally” in the capital – held to mark the first anniversary of the July Uprising – Tarique Rahman urged parties with democratic commitments to overcome differences through dialogue and collaboration.

“We will have differing opinions on many issues, but these must be resolved through dialogue. In the interest of national unity, we must not allow democratic forces to become divided,” he said.

Underscoring the gravity of national cohesion, he added, “For the sake of national unity, it is essential, essential, and essential that we remain united in the interest of the nation. Religion, philosophy, and beliefs may be personal – but the state belongs to all of us.”

Reflecting on the political repression endured during the anti-government movement, the BNP leader claimed that thousands of politically motivated cases were filed against opposition leaders, activists, and supporters – with some facing hundreds of charges. He also alleged that numerous opposition members were subjected to enforced disappearances.

Tarique Rahman described 2024 as a year of extraordinary sacrifice, citing a high death toll during the uprising, including the tragic killing of a four-year-old child. He also referred to the killing of military officers under what he termed the “reign of darkness” during the previous regime.

Describing the rally as a symbolic “journey from darkness to light,” he warned that the struggle for democracy was not over. “We must remain vigilant so that fascism, extremism, and radicalism do not once again cast shadows over our path forward.”

He said the current political landscape offers an “historic opportunity” for citizens to reclaim their rights. “If we can seize this moment, establish people’s political and economic rights, and restore democratic governance, no one will ever again be able to impose fascism or reduce this country to a client state.”

In a direct appeal to the public, he said, “Regardless of religion or identity, I urge every citizen to make a decision-for your rights, for the safety of your families, and for the future of the next generation.”

Calling on citizens across political lines, he added, “Under a fascist regime, none of us were safe-our children, our right to vote, our basic freedoms were all taken away. Now, as the BNP leads this democratic journey toward victory, I call upon all freedom- and democracy-loving citizens to stand united.”

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also addressed the rally, offering special thanks to the Bangladesh Army and the people for their support during the July Uprising.
“I express my sincere gratitude to the patriotic army, the people, students, and political parties whose united efforts made this victory possible,” Fakhrul said.

BNP Standing Committee members Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Salahuddin Ahmed, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also spoke at the event.

A large turnout of party leaders, activists, and supporters attended the rally, which led to heavy traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
