Law reporting has made the public aware of the HC’s expansive powers

Staff Reporter:
Attorney General AM Amin Uddin has said that the people of Bangladesh have come to realize the High Court’s broad authority its ability to intervene in all matters of national interest thanks to the work of the Law Reporters Forum. “Through law reporting, the nation now understands how central the judiciary can be,” he said.

He made these remarks on Tuesday while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the Law Reporters Forum’s newly elected committee for the 2025–2026 term.

“Law reporters are presenting the Supreme Court and the legal arena in such a manner that it deters corruption. Even if someone wants to engage in wrongdoing, they think twice.

On the other hand, good work is being encouraged,” the Attorney General said. “Though I’m not a member of the Law Reporters Forum, I myself used to be a court correspondent at the Dhaka Court.”

The new committee is led by President Hasan Javed and General Secretary Moniruzzaman Mission. Other elected members include Vice-President Ahmad Sarwar Hossain Bhuiyan, Joint Secretary Arafat Munna, Treasurer Manzur Hossain, Organizational Secretary SM Noor Mohammad, Publicity and Publication Secretary Javed Akhter, and Training and Welfare Secretary Jannatul Ferdous Tanvi.

Executive members are Wakil Ahmed Hiron, Bikash Narayan Dutta, Habibur Rahman, and Fazlul Haque Mridha.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon said, “You are not just ordinary journalists. General reporters cannot cover the legal beat effectively. You have become near-experts by working alongside lawyers and understanding the intricacies of the court system. This sets you apart, and it is reflected in the quality of your reporting.”

Referring to the current political context, Khokon added, “The country is now in crisis. There is only a caretaker government, no elected one. Various conspiracies are likely against the nation and its democracy. We hope journalists and lawyers will stand united to defend democratic values.”

BNP Legal Affairs Secretary and Secretary General of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, remarked, “We are two sides of the same coin. In the Supreme Court, we (journalists and lawyers) have worked shoulder to shoulder. We firmly believe this cooperation will continue. However, let us respect each other’s professional boundaries with humility.”

The event also featured remarks by former senior district judge Shahjahan Saju, former SCBA secretary Barrister Badruddoza Badal, former Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju, BNP Legal Forum Organizational Secretary Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Barrister Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon, Mohammad Shishir Monir, SC Unit Member Secretary of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Gazi Towhidur Rahman, SC Legal Aid Committee Member Secretary Jamiul Haque Faisal, and former DRU presidents Ilias Hossain and Nazrul Islam Mithu, among others.
