Holy Ashura today

Staff Reporter :

The nation is set to observe the holy Ashura today with deep religious reverence, mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has called for the establishment of equality, justice, and peace in society, while expressing hopes for unity, solidarity, and continued progress within the Muslim Ummah.

In a message marking the holy occasion of Ashura, Yunus reflected on the enduring significance of the day, which commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions. He said their sacrifice in standing against oppression and injustice holds a timeless place in history.

“Their bravery will continue to inspire humanity with the strength and courage to uphold truth and justice in the face of adversity,” the Chief Adviser stated.

Falling on the 10th day of Muharram – the first month of the Islamic calendar – Ashura marks one of the most poignant and spiritually significant days in the Muslim world.

It commemorates the tragic events of 680 AD, when Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), along with his family members and 72 loyal followers, were martyred in the desert of Karbala on the banks of the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq.

Their courageous stand against tyranny, in defiance of Yazid’s forces, remains a profound symbol of resistance, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

In a message marking the occasion, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid deep tribute to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. Calling Ashura “a mournful, significant, and glorious day,” the Chief Adviser reflected on the enduring impact of Imam Hossain’s sacrifice.

“Islam is a religion of truth, justice, and peace,” Yunus said. “Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), his family, and companions gave their lives to uphold these ideals, and their sacrifice remains an eternal beacon of inspiration for all of humanity.”

He noted that the struggle of Karbala serves as a timeless lesson against oppression and injustice, urging Muslims to embrace the moral courage embodied by the martyrs. “Their stand will forever strengthen our resolve to establish justice and human dignity,” Yunus said.

Recalling the spiritual significance of the day, the Chief Adviser also noted that many major events in Islamic history – including the creation of the world – are believed to have occurred on Ashura.

Citing Hadith, he said the Prophet (PBUH) emphasized fasting on this day and encouraged acts of righteousness to seek closeness to Allah.

“Let us all grasp the spiritual essence of Ashura and dedicate ourselves to good deeds,” Yunus said. “May this sacred day inspire unity, justice, and peace within the Muslim Ummah and in society at large.”

Ashura is being observed across Bangladesh with solemn processions, special prayers, and religious discussions. Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Islamic Foundation centers, and local mosques are hosting events to reflect on the legacy of Karbala.

State-run Bangladesh Betar and BTV, as well as private television channels, are airing special programming dedicated to the day.

National newspapers and online platforms have also published features and supplements highlighting the historical and spiritual importance of Ashura.

The government has declared a public holiday in observance of the day.
