Two female SMU officials surrender, bail denied

Sylhet Bureau :
Two female officials have surrendered to the court in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of irregularities and corruption in recruitment at Sylhet Medical University. However, the court has rejected their bail and ordered them to be sent to jail.

Judge Roknuzzaman of the Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court gave this order on Thursday (July 3). The surrendered officials are university administrative officers Debashree Rani Das and Tamanna Firozi. Both of them are accused in the chargesheet of the case.

ACC Public Prosecutor (PP) Lutful Kibria Shamim said, ‘When accused number 27 Debashree Rani Das and accused number 44 Tamanna Firozi surrendered to the court, the judge did not grant them bail and ordered them to be sent to jail.’

Earlier, on April 24 this year, the court issued arrest warrants against 58 people, including the former vice-chancellor and acting registrar, in a university recruitment corruption case.

According to the charge sheet of the case, there were allegations of widespread irregularities in the recruitment of officials and employees at Sylhet Medical University, established in 2018. The University Grants Commission (UGC) investigation found the truth of these allegations. The investigation report revealed clear evidence of abuse of power and corruption against the then vice-chancellor Morshed Ahmed Chowdhury and acting registrar Md. Naimul Haque Chowdhury.

Later, on April 1, 2024, a case was filed against them from the ACC’s Sylhet Integrated District Office. In addition to the two main accused, the name of 56 more officials and employees working in various positions at the university was mentioned in the case.

The list of accused includes Fahima Khanam Chowdhury, Anjan Debnath, Maidul Islam Chowdhury, Md. Golam Sarwar, Shamsher Russell, Gazi Md. Faraz, Rinku Das, Atiq Shahriar Dhruba, Khaleda Chowdhury, Jannatul Ferdousi, Saju Ibne Hannan Khan, Belal Uddin, Lokman Ahmed, Chowdhury Zulfikar Khaled, Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Halima Begum, Suranjit Chandra Talukder and many others.

Meanwhile, when the matter of corruption related to recruitment in the university was finally proven after the UGC investigation last year, the matter was sent to the ACC. After that, after a long investigation, several accused have surrendered so far in the case filed.
