At least 10 people were injuries including two bullet-hit on Thursday as a clash broke out during the funeral of Saifuddin Quader Chowdhury, a younger brother of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, in Gahira of Raozan in Chittagong.
Police said groups of BNP and Awami League engaged in a clash and exchanged bullets during the burial on Thursday evening after the family barred ruling party lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, a cousin of Saifuddin, from attending the funeral as per the wish of the deceased.
The first namaz-e-janaza of Saifuddin, also the chairman of QC Group of Companies, was held at Hazi Muhammad Mohsin College playground in Chittagong city and the second namaz-e-janaza was held at AJY High School ground in Gahira area on Thursday afternoon.
Saifuddin Quader Chowdhury, son of former Pakistan Parliament Speaker Fazlul Quader Chowdhury and a younger brother of war crimes convict and BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, passed away at United Hospital in the capital on Wednesday.
Mustafizur Rahman, Chittagong additional SP (North), told that the clash erupted as a sequel to family and political rivalry.
The clash took place when ruling Party lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, also a cousin of the deceased, went to attend the burial.
Family members claimed that the deceased, in his lifetime, had asked the family not to allow Fazle Karim at his funeral. After learning that Karim was barred from the funeral, scores of AL activists gathered there and a clash broke out.
The groups traded gunfire for around half an hour and later police took the situation under control. “The deceased was buried and additional force was rushed to the spot,” added the additional SP.
