NSTU student injured in alleged attack by local miscreants

NSTU Correspondent :
A student of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) was reportedly injured in an attack carried out by a group of unidentified local miscreants in the Choumuhani area on Thursday evening.

The victim, Zahedul Haque, is a student of the 2020–21 session in the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at NSTU. He sustained injuries during the incident, which took place around 6:20pm while he was traveling on a university bus headed for Feni.

Eyewitnesses said a confrontation broke out between the university bus driver and a local individual near the Choumuhani Railway Station. Zahedul, who was inside the bus, approached the scene to inquire about the situation. At that point, the assailant allegedly struck him with a stick. The altercation escalated, and the attacker reportedly threatened, “Just because you’re university students doesn’t mean I won’t beat you all in the street.”

According to students present at the scene, the attacker made a phone call, after which a group of 15–20 men arrived and attempted to forcibly drag Zahedul off the bus. They reportedly hurled abuse and issued threats to attack other students as well. The situation deescalated only after members of the armed forces were spotted nearby, prompting the attackers to flee the area.

“I was on the 5pm Feni-bound bus. During a traffic jam in Choumuhani, a dispute occurred with a Star Line bus. Suddenly, a man boarded our bus aggressively. When my friends and I tried to intervene, he hit me with a stick and left the bus, only to return shortly with a large group,” Zahedul recounted. “They tried to pull me out and even pushed some of the female students. It’s terrifying to face such a safety risk as a university student.”
The incident caused panic among the students onboard.

When contacted, NSTU Proctor A.F.M. Arifur Rahman said the matter has been reported to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Police Station. However, he expressed doubts about the clarity of the OC’s response and stated that further steps will be taken through the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Noakhali, if necessary.
