Gonoforum President Montu dies

News Desk :

Gono Forum President and veteran Liberation War organiser Mostafa Mohsin Montu has died at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
He passed away at 5pm on Sunday at Square Hospital, according to Mohammad Ullah Madhu, the party’s information and media secretary.
Montu had been unwell for nearly two months and was making regular visits to the hospital, reports bdnews24.com
Madhu said his condition worsened before Eid-ul-Azha, prompting his admission to the private facility.
Born in 1945, Montu was elected as a member of parliament from Dhaka-3 constituency in the 1986 parliamentary election as an Awami League candidate.
During his student years, Montu became involved with the Chhatra League and went on to serve as chairman of the Jubo League, Awami League's youth front, general secretary of Dhaka district Awami
League, and general secretary of the then unified Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League.
In 1992, he was expelled from the Awami League. Shortly afterwards, Dr Kamal Hossain left the Awami
League and formed the Gono Forum.
Montu later joined Gono Forum under Kamal Hossain's leadership.
In 2009, he was elected the general secretary of the party and remained active as its president until his death.
In the 11th national election in 2018, Montu contested from Dhaka-2 and Dhaka-3 seats as a Gono
Forum candidate and from Dhaka-7 as a Jatiya Oikya Front candidate with the "paddy sheaf" symbol.
