Staff Reporter :

A court has ordered the imprisonment of former Member of Parliament (MP) and Bengal Group Chairman Morshed Alam in connection with the murder case of a student named Md. Shamim in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza gave the order on Wednesday rejecting Morshed Alam’s bail plea during a hearing.

According to court sources, the arrested Morshed Alam was presented before the court. The investigating officer of the case, PBI Sub-Inspector Shahin Mia, appealed to detain him in jail until the investigation is completed.

During the hearing, the defense lawyer submitted a bail petition, while Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi from the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court opposed the bail. After hearing both sides, the court denied the bail and ordered Morshed Alam to be sent to jail.

Earlier, on Tuesday night, Morshed Alam was arrested by the Detective Branch of police from the Gulshan area.

According to the case documents, on August 5, student Md. Shamim (13) joined a protest march with students and the public in the Dhanmondi area as part of an anti-discrimination movement.
When the procession reached the Kalabagan area, it was allegedly attacked by leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations. Shamim was injured in the attack and taken to Suhrawardy Hospital, where doctors declared him dead the following day, August 6.
On October 3, the victim’s mother, Jahanara Begum, filed a murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station naming 128 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Morshed Alam is listed as the 87th accused in the case.
